Update on AT&T Wi-Fi for iPhone

If you remember, more than a week ago, I posted about an AT&T wi-fi portal being available to iPhone users at Starbucks and Barnes & Noble locations. Then a few days later, it was reported that the service was no longer available. Well truth be told, according to this NY Times article, it was simply human error. While this service will eventually be available, no definitive date has been given.

Online US and UK Apple Stores Out of iPhones

So, if you point your browser over to the Apple Store iPhone page, it shows that both the 8GB and 16GB iPhones are listed as “Currently Unavailable”. In recent weeks, is used to read, “Ships in 1-2 Weeks”, but this no longer seems to be the case. However, it does appear that you can still purchase a phone directly from AT&T Wireless. Does this really mean that the release of a new iPhone is imminent? Apple loves to keep things mysterious, don’t they? Hmm… :)

Time Warner Cable adds more HD channels

Yesterday, Time Warner Cable added about 22 HD channels to their current HD lineup here in Brooklyn. These channels include: CNNHD, The Weather Channel HD, Music HDTV, Lifetime Movies HD, History Channel HD and A&EHD. In my opinion, this is pretty good progress. I think TWC is really feeling the pressure to add more HD channels as quickly as possible; considering that DirecTV is several channels ahead of them. The best part is that my TiVo S3 can tune these stations using cable cards; meaning, SDV has not been implemented. Now, they just need to add the SciFi Channel in HD and I’ll be all set. ;)

iTunes to offer same day movie releases

Apple announced today, that new movie releases will be available for purchase on the same day as the DVD release on iTunes. New release prices will be $14.99 and catalog titles, $9.99. Of course movies purchased through iTunes can be viewed on iPhone, iPods (with video capability), Macs, PC’s or Apple TV. This sounds pretty good and could be convenient for many.

AT&T Providing Free Wi-Fi Access To iPhone Users

MacRumors has confirmed that AT&T is providing free wi-fi to iPhone users at Starbucks and Barnes & Noble. Apparently, there’s a customized portal, accessible by an iPhone formatted page, where you enter your phone number and voila! Sounds good to me. I’ll have to go to one of the many Starbucks in the area where I work (midtown Manhattan), to give it a try. :)

UPDATE: According to sources, including MacRumors, it looks like AT&T has disabled this service. Perhaps it was a fluke or the company was just testing the wind. I’ll keep you posted and let you know if or when the service resumes.

Apple releases faster iMacs

Yesterday, to my surprise, Apple released faster iMacs, with speeds up to 3.06GHz. Check out Engadget’s Hands-On review. It sure looks purdy! :)
